Teaching by asking,
not by telling.

Every session is built around the same principles used by the ancient Greeks 2,400 years ago: the student does the thinking, while the tutor guides the way.

01
Open with a question

Every session starts with a diagnostic question. The tutor finds out what the student already knows, and how well they can adapt it to exam questions, before deciding what to teach.

02
Probe the reasoning

When a student answers, the tutor probes deeper to build genuine understanding:
Why?
What evidence would you give?
How does that connect?

03
Hint before revealing

If the student is stuck, the tutor offers a targeted hint instead of the answer. The answer is only given after genuine attempts to answer have failed.

04
Connect to the exam

The tutor ties the student's knowledge and understanding to exam technique: following command words, understanding the mark-scheme, and avoiding common mistakes.

“I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think.”
Socrates

A tutor that listens
before it speaks.

The goal of learning should never be simply to remember what your tutor says. Instead, the goal is to understand it well enough that you could explain it to someone else.

  • Real-time voice conversation with no typing and no lag
  • Socratic questioning adapts to what you actually say
  • Direct answers are withheld until you've tried twice
  • Revision that prepares you for exams

You'll know exactly
where the gaps are.

After every session, students get immediate feedback on what they've learned and where they need to improve, and parents receive a comprehensive session summary. This is the kind of feedback a school report rarely gives.

  • Confidence scores tracked per topic
  • Weak areas flagged automatically
  • Recommended focus areas updated each session
  • Session summaries sent to parents

Common questions.

Why is this better than a human tutor? +

A human tutor is only available for one or two hours a week at fixed times, and they cost upwards of £50 an hour. Director of Studies is available every evening, never cancels, adapts to your child's specific strengths and weaknesses, and gets more effective the more it's used. It gives every student affordable access to world-class private tuition.

What can I expect from a session? +

Each session is a live voice conversation between the student and the tutor. Rather than being lectured at, students are pushed to think and explain. Sessions typically run for 60 minutes and cover between one and three focused topics. Afterwards, both students and parents receive a summary of what was covered and where the gaps are. The best way to understand it is to try it; join the waitlist here.

Which exam boards are supported? +

We currently support AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC, CIE, CCEA, and SQA across 22 different subjects. Content is built directly from the official exam board specifications, so students are always revising the right material.

Is it suitable for both GCSE and A-Level? +

Yes! Director of Studies is built and tailored for both GCSEs and A Levels, with content and exam prep guidance integrated directly from the specification, past papers, and examiner reports.

What does the free trial include? +

Students get one full tutoring session with any tutor and any subject, completely free! No credit card details are required. Both parents and students will receive a session summary afterwards so they can see exactly what was covered and where gaps were identified.

Is my child's data safe? +

Yes. We are fully GDPR compliant. We never share student data with third parties. You can request full account deletion at any time.

Who is behind Director of Studies? +

Director of Studies was founded by the studysesh team. David is a Bye-Fellow at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, and holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge, having previously studied at the University of Oxford. He has spent 5 years so far supervising students at Cambridge from 1st year all the way to Masters level. Erin is a learning science communicator and content creator at the University of Cambridge. She helps almost half a million students from around the world understand how to learn more effectively, and make the process more engaging.
We believe that the future of learning is Socratic, and that high-quality, personalised education should be accessible to every student.
